Hannah wants a camera too!

Need some help...

We really would like to get a good but not expensive digital camera for Hannah and need some help. We are an Olympus family and have read, but not shot with any other cameras. I was looking at the Canons, $200 and under, and saw the Sony and then saw the Kodak and the saw... YIKES!!! We would like to have these pictures to be of good quality, because Hannah and I are going to make a book. (Hint, Hint, wink, wink) We want to see what Hannah sees and the best way we figured was for her to take some photos too. Just think of the possibilities with this, an ABC book, Nature book, and so on. :) This will promote her writing skills as well, just imagine the stories... hehehehe

So, if you would not mind leaving a comment on the type of camarea you use... and the ease or any other information, we would be so appreciative.

*Check below this post... I am leaving it at the top just to see. Thanks!

My newest camera is a Panasonic DMC-FZ5, a gift from my mother. I love it. I wouldn't recommend that one for Hannah, though. My other one might be a better fit for a younger user, a Nikon Coolpix S1. It's the right size, more durable, and takes good pictures outdoors. (Its low light shots aren't so good.)

Note: Probably neither of these are the most recent versions by the manufacturer. Whatever camera you buy, just accept that the newer one comes out the next day.

My husband and I just went through this dilemma and settled on a Sony DSC-W100 that gave each other for our anniversary. We purchased at BestBuy for a tad over $200. It has 8.1 Mega pixels, 2.5 inch lcd monitor, nice zoom with macro and not too awfully complicated. It has several "scenes" I think they are called...for example auto, portrait, landscape, twilight etc. I'm fully satisfied with mine. Whatever you get I'm sure Hannah will enjoy. This one may be a bit complicated for her. But, this is what I have. We used Flickr's site
http://www.flickr.com/cameras/ to locate this camera.

Mom and I were talking about this earlier. A few suggestions for you:
1. I would try Wal-Mart or Circuit City. David got his camera there. Sometimes they have really good deals on cameras that are discontinued. David got his for about $100.
2. For Hannah, stick with cameras that have an digital zoom, not optical. Optical are the ones with extending lenses. One good drop and it can destroy the camera. Ask my sister, she can attest to that. Digital zoom doesn't have the best photo quality zoomed in, but you'll be kicking yourself later if it happens to break.
3. Make sure to get a camera with an auto lens cover and an auto shut off, which most have anyway.
4. Get a cam than can use AA batteries as well as rechargeables. ALWAYS a life saver.
5. Go with a cam that has most of it's settings as buttons or knobs. Especially useful for those quick shots that just won't wait.
6. Don't underestimate the value of wrist straps. ;)
7. Try to get a camera that uses the same storage card as yours. Then you can use your cards interchangeably if you need to.

David and I have a Sony DSCS60. He got his at Wal-mart and I got mine on Ebay. I don't have any complaints. It's a tough little thing, I'll tell you that. I am a fan of Sony. It has an easy interface. Little to no trying to figure out the menus. Just a point and shoot type of camera. We have rechargeable batteries but I find myself using AA batteries more often. They seem to last longer.

David also found this little gem for Hannah. I don't know what her favorite color is, but I love green. It's 5 megapixels, lightweight, uses SD Memory card... more specs. It does have an optical zoom but it comes with a wrist strap. SUCH a lifesaver.

Here is another blue one. It's by a brand I've never heard of, which is a tad worrisome. It has a digital zoom, very lightweight, 5mp, lots of auto features and comes with a strap and a carrying case. Woot! more specs

Hope that was helpful. =)
